Set in the smallest of all mythical countries, Peter Ustinov's 20th-century West End hit play unfolds on the border between East and West. This tiny nation, with an army of two that doesn't even stand but slouches, becomes the center of attention as both Russia and the U.S. vie for its president's allegiance. Russia sends an ambassador, a Romanoff, while the U.S. sends a typical business diplomat. One comedic highlight is the president shuttling between the rival embassies, navigating their blandishments and threats. Amidst this backdrop of inept Cold War diplomacy, the play also explores the frustrated romance between the Russian ambassador's son and the American ambassador's daughter, delivering a delightful satire on international affairs.
