The following are care pathways for prenatal screening and beyond:
+ 7 - 10 Weeks
Dating/Viability Ultrasound
Confirm viability and visualise heartbeat*
Confirm single or multiple pregnancy
Exclude ectopic or anembryonic pregnancy
Determine expected due date (EDD)
*Recommended 7+ weeks of pregnancy otherwise may be too early to acquire this information.
+ 12-14 Weeks
Anatomy Ultrasound
Performed in conjunction with NIPT to rule out structural abnormalities. Ultrasound is used to assess early fetal and placental development including brain, face, heart, abdomen, spine, limbs, cord origin and insertion. Maternal structures such as cervix and ovaries are also examined. Recommended at 13 weeks of pregnancy. Results take 3-5 business days.
or
+ 12-14 Weeks
Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound (NTUS)
First trimester screening test, performed as an alternative to NIPT. NTUS combines ultrasound assessment of nuchal translucency (fluid at the back of baby's neck), maternal risk factors and a blood specimen (free - hCG, PAPP-A and AFP) to determine the overall risk for common chromosomal abnormalities. NTUS has a detection rate of 90-95% and must be performed between 11w6d and 13w6d of pregnancy.
Pathology form can be obtained from your doctor or imaging provider.
Results take 5 business days.
+ 20 Weeks
Morphology Ultrasound
Recommended at 20 weeks, a detailed assessment of fetal anatomy is performed. This scan includes facial features such as profile, nose, lips, orbits and lens, head/brain, heart, stomach, lungs, abdomen, kidneys, bladder, spine, arms, legs, hands, feet and genitals. Cervical length, placental location and distance from cervix are also documented at this scan.
+ 24 + Weeks
Growth & Well-being Ultrasound
Your doctor or midwife may recommend a third trimester ultrasound if clinically indicated. This scan is to assess fetal size and well-being, review fetal anatomy, assess the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding baby and monitor the blood flow through the umbilical cord. The position of baby will be documented, and the placenta and cervical length will be reviewed in preparation for birth.
+ 28 Weeks
3D/4D Ultrasound
3D ultrasound is used to demonstrate the fetal face with greater clarity than 2D pictures. The addition of motion (4D) can demonstrate fetal behaviours such as yawning, smiling and limb movements. This can be a profound bonding experience for parents. The optimal timing for 3D/4D imaging is 24-28 weeks' gestation when the baby has more subcutaneous fat and the amniotic fluid volume is optimal. It is difficult to obtain 3D images late in the third trimester. This is a non-diagnostic assessment.
